German Champion Masters athlete meets with Jamaica Masters

German champion masters athlete Hans Dieter Rheineck met with Jamaican masters athletes on Thursday, February 5 while on a visit to Jamaica.

Seventy-two year old Rheineck who has three individual gold medals from the 1985 and 1987 World Masters Championships in the 200 and 400metres respectively, is in Jamaica to participate in the St. Hugh’s ‘Swans’ 5K event scheduled for Saturday, February 7.

Rheineck met with athletes from the Jamaica Masters Athletics Association at Stadium East as they trained in preparation for upcoming track and field meets. During the meeting, he expressed pleasure at being in Jamaica, him being a big fan of iconic Jamaican athletes such as Usain Bolt, Donald Quarrie and Merlene Ottey. He said he was pleased to see the strides masters athletics is making in Jamaica, noting that he was impressed with what he saw of the athletes, some of whom had discussions with him on athletics related matters. He encouraged the athletes to continue to ‘compete and bring glory to your country, notwithstanding the challenges as it is a glorious feeling to be able to still be fit and healthy at our age.”

For his part, President of the Jamaica Masters Athletics Association, Leo McEwan expressed his appreciation that Rheineck was able to meet with his counterparts in Jamaica.

McEwan noted that some of the issues discussed were similar to both countries and endeavoured to form an alliance with Rheineck and his body in Germany with a view to identifying areas where they could pursue further talks.

Members of the JMAA are busy preparing for upcoming meets such as the Gibson McCook Relays which this year will have two overseas teams, Trinidad & Tobago and Canada participating in the Masters 4 x 1 as well as the World Masters Championships scheduled for Lyon, France, between August 4 and 16 later this year.
